Sistas: The Musical tells the story of five Black women who find love and old memories packed away in the attic after their matriarch’s death. The show explores the history of Black women, from the Jim Crow era to the 1990s – the struggles, joys, and triumphs of being Black and a woman in America told through the soulful music of songbirds such as Billie Holiday to the lyrical sound of Jill Scott and Beyoncé.

Sistas: The Musical was Written by Dorothy Marcic, Directed by Eileen J. Morris, Musically Directed by Dwayne Fulton, and Choreographed by Mils “M. J.” James.

New Horizon Theater, Inc. (NHT) was founded with the mission to bring to the greater Pittsburgh area consistent, high-quality cultural events, reflecting the African-American points of view. NHT provides an ongoing venue for ethnic writers and performers to further their professional development and creativity.

Synopsis: SYNOPSIS: This joyful musical follows five women as they come together to clean out their matriarch’s home and discover fragments of their past. Through this process, they explore their family history, the legacy of black women, and their own individual struggles, while also celebrating the strength of sisterhood and the enduring power of family bonds.  As they share stories and memories, they honor black women throughout history while performing top hits from the 1930s to the 1990s, from Billie Holiday to Beyonce.

Characters: Gloria- Age 30s black woman. Very religious. Roberta- 30-ish black woman. Angry at life and the White Male system. She wants everyone to see how bad things are. Dr. Simone- College-educated, professional woman, in her late 30s or early 40s. She is professorial. She is divorced and wants to be in a relationship. She is the sister of Gloria and Roberta. Tamika- Age 18. High school senior. Dresses hip. She uses her body to gain power. She is Simone’s daughter. Heather-White Woman. She is the sister-in-law of the three women. Married their brother. She is educated and verbally quick, almost a smart-ass. She works with Simone at the community college. She is in her 30s. Grandma- (Optional) Appears at the end, no speaking.

Because of the overwhelming success of SISTAS in January at the theater in City of Praise in Landover, MD, we are bringing SISTAS back for the whole month of June, 2025.  At every performance, the theater was filled with a rousing audience, who sang and often got in the aisle and danced to the songs. The cast was amazing, and the response they got was thrilling.

On March 8th and 9th 2025, SISTAS played to a packed house at the City of Praise Family Ministries in Landover, MD. A cast of 5 talented actors wowed the audience with songs and a compelling story of family, love, betrayal, and redemption.

SISTAS was co-produced by Franzblau Media and City of Praise Family Ministries, collaborating with Bishop Joel Peebles and Pastor Ylawnda Peebles.

The story of Black women from Bessie Smith to Beyonce, SISTAS was written by Columbia University professor and Fullbright Scholar Dorothy Marcic, and has played in over 20 cities, including 9 years Off-Broadway.

Augusta Jr. Players Win Big With SISTAS

Congratulations to the Augusta Jr Players who won several awards at The Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) held in Mobile, AL March 13-17, 2024 for their production of SISTAS!  SETC is the largest theatre network in the nation dedicated to fostering artistic excellence, professional development, and community within the performing arts industry.

The Augusta Jr. Players traveled to Mobile, Alabama for the Southeastern Theatre Conference, where they performed their show for competition.

For two years in a row, they’ve won in their category of community theatre in Georgia, competing against adults.

This year, the Jr. Players won multiple honors at the awards ceremony Saturday night, March 16, including best scenic design, excellence in musical ensemble, and 2024 outstanding production.

The talented performers were also scouted at the competition and could earn scholarships based on their performances.

The off-Broadway musical Sistas is a nonstop celebration, and Broadway.com jumped at the chance to chat with this show’s talented company. The production follows five women as they prepare to bury the matriarch of their family. The women discuss their family history and the history of African-American women through popular music spanning from Billie Holiday to Beyonce.
